Rambo!

First Blood

Spoilers!

In English

It is june already. My son is growing well and by now I have started to reduce the breastfeedings he gets, which means that Sander is spending more time on the care of our son, which gives me more free time. I use that time well, I have taken up knitting and have started my first sweater for our son.

I also have some more time to watch TV. The other day I read a newsarticle on the fourth Rambo movie, in which John Rambo will go to Burma to fight against the brutal militairy regime. This inspired me to watch the first Rambo movie, which was on telly yesterday, I programmed the video and watched the movie this morning, during breakfast.

I was impressed with this movie from 1982, 25 years old and still with a current message. I was expecting a run of the mill action movie with a stainless steel hero who is bothered by nothing and nobody. But John Rambo was actually a man with feelings. Warhero from the Vietnam war cannot find his place in society after all he has been through and starts to drift. In Jerkwater USA (moviequote) he runs afoul of a smallminded sherrif. Rambo also suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and loses it when he is ineffectually tortured by the sherrifs. He destroys the policestation and escapes into the local woods, where he starts a war against the locals.
I was amazed to see Rambo was a character with some depth. Rambo has touble adapting, Rambo has pain, nightmares and fears. Even though he is a highly trained killing machine with a trauma and a reason to hate his persuers, he is for the most part of the film on the defensive and hardly kills anyone.
All in all a movie worth watching, especially because the subject, war veteran cannot adapt to normal society and loses control, is currently a large problem in the US (and other countries) where veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan come home, find they cannot handle their experiences and cause great harm to themselves and others.

I am also very interested in the fourth Rambo movie, John Rambo, in which he goes to Burma to fight the brutal militairy regime there. As you know I have worked for the Burma Centre Netherlands for some time. The situation in Burma is horrible. I wonder if this movie will draw the attention of the world to Burma.
